Behind the Screens: Meet John Albanese, PA-C

In this edition of Behind the Screens, we introduce you to John Albanese, PA-C - a former firefighter and EMT whose journey from emergency response to virtual medicine reflects a lifelong passion for helping people, advancing technology, and making care more accessible.

🩺 Why did you choose medicine?

Before becoming a Physician Assistant, John spent a decade as a firefighter and EMT — a career that deeply shaped his approach to patient care.

“My path changed the day I went on my first CPR call,” he said. “I fell in love with medicine and switched my major from computer science. Now I get to combine both - my love for technology and my commitment to helping people.”

That combination of heart and innovation has defined his career. John later served as Vice President of the New Jersey State Society of PAs and was named New Jersey’s PA of the Year in 2017 - recognitions that reflect his leadership in advancing the PA profession and elevating patient care.

As a professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PA Program, he instills those same values in his students.

“Anyone can learn the daily tasks of medicine,” he tells them, “but it takes a special individual to show the person behind the white coat. That’s where the real treatment happens.”

💡 What inspired you to join Dimer Health?

For John, joining Dimer Health was as much about technology as it was about people.

“I’ve always loved technology and the idea of advancing healthcare into the modern age,” he shared. “With two young daughters, Dimer’s model gives me the flexibility to be present for my family while still delivering high-quality care. It’s the best of both worlds.”

After years in traditional medical settings, John found Dimer Health’s hybrid of clinical excellence and innovation to be a natural fit. The platform allowed him to merge his passion for tech with his commitment to patient care - offering the kind of support and accessibility he believes every patient deserves.

🏡 What do you enjoy most about providing virtual care?

Virtual care, John says, has transformed how he connects with patients. Without the distractions of a busy clinic, he’s able to focus entirely on each conversation - often leading to deeper, more meaningful interactions.

“In a clinic, you can rely on physical cues or touch,” he explained. “Virtually, I have to be hyperaware of my other senses and focus on building connection through conversation. In many ways, that leads to richer discussions. Patients are relaxed, at home, and often more open.”

He’s noticed that this setting allows patients to express themselves more freely - especially when they’re recovering, managing complex conditions, or just need reassurance that what they’re feeling is normal.

How would you describe the value of Dimer’s model?

When asked about what makes Dimer Health unique, John describes it as “healthcare returning to its roots - but with modern tools.”

“There’s something really special about the conversations we have with patients. We’re not just treating problems; we’re preventing them. Dimer brings healthcare back into the home. It’s the modern version of house calls, but digital.”

He believes Dimer’s human-centered model is what sets it apart. By putting communication and compassion at the forefront, the team helps patients avoid unnecessary ER visits - providing early intervention and peace of mind when it matters most.

“Our values are pure. We’re focused on connection, prevention, and accessibility. It’s medicine that meets patients where they are.”

Is there a patient story that’s stayed with you?

For John, some of the most meaningful moments come when quick thinking and calm guidance make a critical difference.

He recalls one patient who developed shortness of breath after starting a new medication and called Dimer in a panic.

“She was terrified,” he said. “I stayed with her on the phone, helped her focus on her breathing, and guided her through calling 911. By the time the EMTs arrived, she was calmer, breathing better, and I was able to give a complete handoff to the ER team. We prevented a crisis from escalating.”

In another instance, John helped a patient whose surgical drains were malfunctioning and feared an ER visit was inevitable.

“I was able to troubleshoot remotely and coordinate with their interventional radiology team for next-day care. We solved the problem without the ER. They were relieved - and that’s the goal: keeping people safe, calm, and cared for.”

❤️ What do you love most about your profession?

For John, the reward of being a Physician Assistant comes from making a tangible difference in every patient encounter - no matter the setting. His guiding philosophy is simple yet powerful:

“If I don’t leave you better off than when I first met you, then I didn’t do my job.”

He values the adaptability and reach of the PA profession, noting how it allows him to grow across specialties and connect with patients in meaningful ways.

“PAs are dynamic and versatile. That flexibility means we can help patients in so many different ways - and that’s what keeps the work fulfilling.”

Outside of Work

Outside of medicine, John’s creativity and curiosity shine. He’s an avid photographer, specializing in macro and landscape photography, and enjoys the digital editing process as much as the capture.

He also maintains a Wi-Fi-connected coral reef aquarium, blending his love of science and tech - a perfect reflection of his approach to life and work.

At home, John’s world revolves around his wife, two daughters, and their dog. Whether he’s spending time with family, teaching, or exploring new technologies, his focus remains on connection - the same principle that guides his care.

“95% of the suffering from any disease is in your mind’s approach to it,” he said. “If I can help someone feel seen, calm, and supported, that’s the best kind of medicine.”
